Fiscal Responsibility
What are your thoughts on more than doubling the mayor’s salary?
I do not support the more than doubling of the mayor salary the current council representatives support nor do I support forming an advisory committee to study the issue. The Charter Commission presented the council with a recommendation (5% increase) which the council promptly ignored in favor of this ridiculous increase. This is a clear example of the fiscal irresponsibility of the existing elected body. As citizens, we need to seriously question the judgement of elected officials who grossly ignore recommendations of independent commissions as has happened here.
What are some examples of the fiscal irresponsibility I see?
From 2022 to 2026 the current council has approved budgets which increased property taxes 41.58% and increased general fund expenditures by 42.89%. At the same time, general fund salaries have increased 48.37%. From 2023 to 2026 general fund benefits have increased by 44.62%. All of this while inflation has “only” risen by 19%. Increasing government spending by more than 2x the pace of inflation over a four-year period is simply irresponsible. See the numbers, straight out of the city budget, below.
What does fiscal equity mean? One example to think about.
According to the 2026 budget, Brooklyn Park has 467 full time employees. If we gave every full-time employee a 3% raise in 2027 it would cost the city ~ $1.4 million dollars. We could instead give each full-time employee a ~ $3,000 raise and it would cost the city about the same $1.4 million dollars. Campaigning
Since filing to run for City Council, I have been contacted by numerous companies promising to “help” me get elected. You know those annoying text messages you get from politicians? It likely comes from a service the politician hired. I will not be hiring one of those services so you will not receive an annoying text from me. In fact, when I receive one of those annoying texts, I tend to vote for someone else. Politicians invading my personal space via text is just not right.
